Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
On Thursday of the First Week of Lent (March 2) we will read the penitential Canon of St. Andrew of Crete. It is a lengthy penitential canon composed in the seventh century. The Canon is written in such form that the faithful identify themselves with many people and events found in the Bible.
Because Great Lent is a season of repentance, fasting, and intensified prayer, the Orthodox Church regards more frequent reception of communion as especially desirable at that time. Pre-sanctified Liturgy, is a liturgical service for the distribution of the Holy Gifts on the weekdays of Great Lent. The service consists of Daily Vespers combined with additional prayers and communion. The communion bread has already been consecrated with the precious Blood and reserved at the previous Sunday’s Divine Liturgy. During Lent, many Orthodox faithful fast sometimes from midnight and sometimes the entire workday, not eating anything after the morning meal until they break the fast with Holy Communion at this evening service.
Our Church School children will have a procession with the icons on the Sunday of Orthodoxy. In venerating icons and in our Orthodox faith, we recognize that Christ was not only Lord but also man.
The second Sunday of Great Lent is dedicated to St. Gregory Palamas (March 12). On that day our Church will host the Lenten Vespers and dinner. This dinner, which is also called the Meal of Love (or Agape), will be prepared by our Circle of Serbian Sisters. The main theme of that Sunday is the Grace of God that we receive through prayer, fasting, and charitable giving.

Драга браћо и сестре у Христу,
У четвртак прве недеље поста (2. марта) читаћемо Покајни канон Св. Андреја Кристског. То је дугачка покајна молитва која је написана у седмом веку. Канон је написан тако да се верни поистовећују са личностима и догађајима из Светог писма.
Због тога што је Велики пост период покајања, поста и појачане молитве, Православна Црква нас позива да се у том периоду чешће причешћујемо. Литургија Пређеосвећених дарова је служба на којој се причешћујемо радним данима током Великог поста. Ова служба је састављена од вечерњег и молитви за Свето причешће. Хлеб којим се причешћујемо је освећен, и са Светом крвљу сачуван на претходној недељној Литургији. Многи православци се у току Великог поста пре ове службе потпуно уздржавају од јела и пића од поноћи, а неки у току читавог радног дана после посног јутарњег оброка.
Деца из наше Црквене школе ће у Недељу Православља да прошетају са иконама. Када целивамо иконе, ми према Православном предању спознајемо Христа, не само као Бога, него и као човека.
Друга недеља Великог поста је посвећена Св. Григорију Палами (12. март). Наша Црква је тог дана домаћин великопосног вечерњег и вечере. Овај оброк, кога још називамо трпезом љубави, припремиће наше Коло српских сестара. Главана тема ове недеље је благослов Божији, који добијамо кроз пост, молитву и дела милосрђа.
